Unlocking your Potential
The hardest and most rewarding lesson I’ve learnt in life so far is trusting God’s timing in my life. This is equally thrilling and terrifying. I never feel entirely equipped to carry out God’s mission. But we all are. There are many (so many) moments where I’ve completely underestimated the power of the Holy Spirit and His role in my life and how He always meets me when I take steps out of my comfort zone.
I can recall becoming a youth leader as a fresh 18 year old. Completely out of my depth but excited to serve. The first few nights were terrifying. I had to remove myself from the crowd because the realisation of the weight of the role left me panicking in the bathroom. Over and over all I could think and feel was,
“I can’t do this”
“All the other leaders are better at this”
“I’m not good enough to lead God’s people”.
I know I’m not alone in thinking that these moments aren’t shared among leaders at least once in their journey. This is why community is so important! We need people to do life with, it’s how God intended us to live it. With some encouragement and prayer, despite how I was feeling I knew there was a purpose and a journey God was taking me on. So every week I came back to lead.
At times, we need to decide that feelings are moments; we can decide not to give in to and instead embrace the promises of God over our life. This is when we start to unlock the potential God’s given us. Ephesians 2:10 is verse that has been my decision maker in many of these types of overwhelming moments.
“For we are His creation, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared ahead of time so that we should walk in them.” — Ephesians 2:10
So let’s walk the path God’s prepared for us. We may stumble and take a few wrong turns. We definitely won’t always feel like we’re good enough, but that’s where God meets us. That’s where we unlock our potential. We were created for this.
I’ve now been leading youth for 5 years and will be wrapping up in the middle of the year when my husband and I get to welcome to the world our first child. We’ll be stepping into some new roles as the months roll on and the challenges I know we’ll face are just the beginning of trusting in God’s good plan for us.
It’s equally thrilling and terrifying.
