Jane Grover and Jacob Leung talk all things Christmas!
We got two of Everywoman’s funnest foodies together to chat through all things this Christmas season!
(which is only 21 days away)
Jacob: Ok, Jane what’s on your menu for Christmas? I noticed you have chickens in your garden…. Roast chicken?
Jane: Ha! Our hens are for a supply of fresh eggs not birds for eating! I’m quite sure the girls would be a little on the tough side for roasting. No, this year it will be a beautiful leg of pork (ham) from a local NSW farmer, smoked and then lovingly glazed by me (a mixture of local honey from my next door neighbour’s bee hives, some not so local French mustard and my home-made citrus marmalade) making the fragrant and glossy centre-piece, adorning our Christmas table. Oh and Australian prawns - we always have prawns, plus a few seasonal salads and my Spicy Fruit Mince Tarts, flavoured with fresh apricot and ginger, then to finish.. definitely a slice of my mum’s famous Christmas cake! What about you Jacob? - I suppose you’ll be cooking something stunning out of the Christmas chapter of your sassy new cookbook?
Jacob: To be honest I am not the greatest at following recipes. I will start with recipes from the book and make some tweaks as I usually do - constraints are not good for my creative juices. Glazed ham and my Bomb.com Alaska will be featured though. So, what are your top 3 tips for Christmas cooking Jane?
Jane: Keep it simple, go with dishes you are familiar with and do as much preparation in the days leading up to the big day that you can, so as to take the pressure off. Less really is more, especially when you want to be able to enjoy the moment with family and friends. What’s your favourite part of celebrating Christmas Jacob?
Jacob: Hmmmm favourite - that’s tough so I will answer with a few things! I love hanging out with all the extended family but best of all is going into a food coma and having a nanna nap - Christmas is one of the few days I don’t feel guilty about doing nothing!
Jane: Christmas season nanna naps are at the top of my list of loves too - tell us are you the “go to guy” for the Christmas Table catering in your family or do you get a rest for the day and let the family take over? Do you have three top tips fo Christmas cooking to share with us too?
Jacob: Yes, I help with the cooking for Christmas - too many mouths to feed for one person to do it alone. One, delegate to the family different meals to prepare. Two, prep days in advance where you can. This results in a simple and relaxed Christmas. Three, pre-order all your big ticket food items, oysters, prawns, ham, turkey, cherries and mangos! Nothing more stressful to miss out on the best for the best day of the year! So Jane, we have a little something special coming up this Sunday - what’s the plan?
Jane: Sorry, you lost me I’m now thinking about cherries, prawns...Well, this Sunday you are coming to cook for me and a crowd in my front garden...that’s the big plan! I’d love people to get the opportunity to see you do your thing, cooking and styling food; creating a delicious summer recipe alfresco - we will of course also chat together, (because we both love a chat!) talking about the process and journey of writing and publishing your amazing book - Jacob Food - The Entertainers Guide to Food You Will Actual Make.
Jacob: I actually can’t wait to be cooking with you in the outdoors - it will be a first for us! So looking forward to sharing a simple and easy recipe. For some strange reason whenever we hang out things get a bit wild! So who knows what could happen really! Exciting times and you should all come!
Jane: I can’t wait - my neighbours will be sticking their heads over the fence and drooling on the letterbox - I think I’d better go invite them so they don’t miss out! See you Sunday!
You are invited to join Jane and Jacob this Sunday!
